(Montel) EU diplomats have approved the European Commission’s proposed ban on Russian coal imports, the French EU presidency tweeted late on Thursday.
The ban is part of a fifth package of EU sanctions against Russia the diplomats approved late Thursday in response to the war in Ukraine.
The EC was also working on further sanctions, including on oil imports, it said on Tuesday when it proposed the fifth package.
The decision to tighten sanctions came amid evidence of war crimes committed by Russian troops in the area surrounding Kyiv.
Russia is Europe’s largest supplier of thermal coal and typically provides Germany, for example, with more than half its coal supplies.
The EU also depends on Russia for around 40% of its natural gas and nearly 30% of its oil imports, with national dependencies varying.
