(Montel) Germany’s peak power demand could more than double to reach up to 200 GW by 2050 as more sectors of the economy use intermittent renewable electricity amid a push towards decarbonisation.
Peak consumption would fluctuate between 80-175 GW in a scenario with a surge in flexible demand sources such as electric vehicles or green hydrogen capacities, said Matthias Koch, analyst at think tank Oeko Institut.
In contrast, the highest hourly load over the last five years reached 80.9 GW in 2017, Entso-e data showed.
