(Montel) Key Colombian coal producer Cerrejon resumed production on Tuesday after workers early last week ended three-months of strike action, a company spokesman told Montel.
Although the industrial dispute was resolved last Monday, operations could only resume after pit and equipment safety checks and training on Covid-19 procedures.
A source close to the situation said the firm may load around 1m tonnes this month.
The shortfall in supply over the past three months from the firm, which is an important exporter of thermal coal to Atlantic basin destinations – including Turkey – has provided support for European coal prices at a time of heightened regional demand and declining stocks.
The Global Coal Des ARA index – a benchmark for European coal trading – was assessed last at USD 62.50/t, up 14% from when the strike began in late August.
